I don't know why or how this has such a low rating, maybe because it is mostly idiots on here who know NOTHING about HDTV's.br /br /See I am the technical type! I know what I am doing! I am not sure about the rest of the world though...br /br /This player is a PERFECT 10! Toshiba sure does know about HD, they do it RIGHT! Even though this DVD player is not exactly HD, it puts out a 1080i Signal. It can be converted and sharpen your picture so it looks so close to HD, it make your regular DVDs look better than ever! I can only imagine what their HD DVD Player is like, I am gonna get that soon!br /br /To explain this a little better to those who may not understand technology as well as others:br /br /Think of a DVD Disc as a box packed to the fullest, so crammed in there that it won't fit anything else in it. And imagine this DVD Player as the one who has to open the "BOX." Basically the DVD is "released" into the DVD player and is open/unpacked... What the DVD Player then does is it processes the pixels and makes them fit to the screen in the best way possible. With your HDTV, it knows that it is 16:9 Formated, and depending on your focal resolution, whether is be anywhere from 480i - 720p - 1080i, it will automatically be processed to the highest standard for your TV, so you get the best picture and the more for your money, better than blurry Audio/Video cables, the HDMI port/cable is the most advanced Hi-Def port/cable in the known universe. Of course it's developed by SONY, the only #1 brand that isn't full of Bologna!br /br /If you have an HDTV and you can't afford the NEW Toshiba HD-DVD Player, GET THIS! You will not only be saving time, you will be saving more money then trying to find the right one, buy this one!

Toshiba SD-4990 Upconverting Progressive Scan DVD Player Feature

  • Slim-profile, single-disc upconverting DVD player; measures 16.9 x 1.65 x 8.2 inches (WxHxD)
  • Upconverts 480p DVD video to high defintion 720p/108i via HDMI connection
  • Compatibility with DVD movie, CD audio,CD-R/CD-RW, DVD-R/RW, and VCD discs; DivX, JPEG, MP3 and WMA files
  • Outputs: 1 composite, 1 S-Video, 1 component, 1 HDMI
  • DVD offer Dolby Digital/DTS decoding; coaxial and optical digital audio outputs
Watch your favorite DVDs on your high-definition flat screen television with no loss of video quality thanks to the Toshiba SD-4990 upconverting, single-disc DVD player. Using the HDMI connection and a compatible TV, you'll get uncompressed digital video up to HDTV level resolutions of 720p or 1080i. And since this conversion is performed within the player, the signal remains free from excessive digital-to-analog conversion artifacts. You'll also be able to view your high-megapixel digital camera snapshots in enhanced resolution via the HDMI connection. p Measuring just 1.65 inches high, this stylishly silver, super-slim player is compatible with a wide variety of disc and digital file formats, including DVD-R/RW, CD-R/RW, and VCD discs as well as MP3, WMA, and JPEG (Kodak Picture and FujiColor CDs) content burned to disc. It's also DivX Home Theater Certified, meaning that it's compatible with video burned to disc using both the DivX video format. pp The SD-4990 performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, too--a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture. p With the JPEG Viewer, you can easily display your favorite digital photos and create custom slideshows with a few simple clicks of the player's remote control. The interactive Digital Picture Zoom feature allows you to select an area of the video from a DVD and magnify it. Other DVD playback features include fast scan, slow motion, multi-angle selection, multi-subtitle selection, and parental lock. p You get vivid, realistic sound, thanks to Toshiba's 24-bit/192 kHz pulse code modulation (PCM) audio processor. PCM audio translates digital signals from your DVDs and CDs into warmer, natural sound. The DVD player offers Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, and you can connect to a multi-channel home theater surround sound system via the coaxial digital audio output. It also produces 3D virtual surround sound from two speakers. It features the following video and audio connections: ulliComposite A/V: 1 liS-Video: 1 liComponent Video: 1 liHDMI: 1 liDigital audio: 1 coaxial, 1 optical /ulpbTech Talk/bbriDivX/i is a compressed digital video format (like MP3) that's based on the MPEG-4 video compression standard. It can reduce the video from a DVD (MPEG-2) to around 10 percent of its original size while still retaining good video and audio quality, enabling you to store several two-hour length movies on burned DVD media. piHDMI/i is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV). piComponent video/i (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound. pbWhat's in the Box/bbr Upconverting single-disc DVD player, remote control (with batteries), printed operating instructions PROGRESSIVE SCAN DVD PLAYER W/HDMI DIVX

No 720p/1080i via component video output - Timothy -
I bought this over a year ago. I'm just upgrading to HD (1080i). My receiver has component video inputs/outputs but does not have HDMI inputs/outputs, so I'm electing to go the component video route. Well, guess what: This DVD player can do 480i and 480p via the component video output, but can do nothing higher. What, exactly, is the point of having component video output then? To boost sales, of course. Schmucks like me buy the unit assuming that it is capable of 1080i via component video just like my per month HD cable box.br /br /I'm more than a little disappointed in Toshiba for this hoodwink. They may have gotten my money this time, but I won't buy from them again.br /br /Here's a break down of video modes the video outputs will support (from the user's manual):br /br /S-Video Outputbr /480ibr /br /Component Output:br /480ibr /480pbr /br /HDMI Output:br /480pbr /720pbr /1080ibr /

firmware solution - Jules Raven -
True does need firmware upgrade, doubt toshiba will be supplying one as unit has been archived by manufacturer, anythow since i only paid for it at a discount store why not take a chance. went to toshiba website, download firmware and created update disc. power on unit and incert disc, replied start update and could hear disc reading, disc stopped reading after a min or two. update message still on screen, gave it a couple of minutes, popped out disc, power off/power on put in move alien, palyed perfect, tried a divx movie, perfect again, no features lost and picture is graet through HDMI connector. ooops forgot to mention the firmware used was for thd sd-4000 which is available on toshiba site.

Sony is making very disappointing items - Julius Kovatch - Roseville, California USA
This Upscaling DVD player is a piece of useless junk. I have never been so disappointed with Sony before but I am getting very disenchanted now. This player worked fine for a few days then the picture on the screen goes black in every 8-10 minutes then comes back after a few seconds. Nobody can watch DVD movies like this. I purchased a cheaper Toshiba Upscaling DVD player and the same disks play perfect on it without any glitch.br /Shame on Sony for cutting corners and selling useless piece of cheap junk.

Piece of useless junk - Clovis Reader - Clovis, CA United States
Don't waste your money on this piece of useless junk. I bought this and it worked OK for about 2 weeks and then it never worked right. It would only turn on when it felt like it. It was very temperamental. I finally threw it away after awhile. I have never had such a problem with a DVD payer before.br /br /It is a cheap piece of junk. Stay away!

Toshiba XDE600 1080p Upconverted DVD Extended Detail

Toshiba XDE600 1080p Upconverted DVD Extended Detail Review

This is a great DVD player, I got it for 60, free shipping. I would like to say first off that the XDE features do work great, since that is why you are considering buying this guy. I use the sharp setting for any good transfer, but the color setting and contrast are also nice for older movies that are lacking in those areas. If the DVD image is sub-par resolution, the sharp setting WILL create artifacts that ruin your enjoyment, and I turn it off or use a different setting. Good quality movie + XDE sharp = Blu Ray? No, but its halfway there.br /br /There is, however, one BIG thing to be aware of before you buy this thing and think all your dreams will come true. 4:3 content will be stretched to 16:9 when upscaled to 1080p, 1080i, or 720p. This includes letterbox widescreen. You must set the DVD player to 480p and use a setting on the TV from there.br /br /USB drive: Nice for mp3 playback, I use it instead of turning on the PS3. But, I wish there was some kind of visualization, (milkrop-style.) Haven't used it to do any *.jpg slideshows yet.br /br /Digital audio outputs: Both coaxial and optical! Thanks Toshiba! Sounds great.br /br /** NOTE: The default audio output setting is PCM. For Dolby Digital or DTS you must change this setting to bitstream.br /br /Load times: Noticeably faster than my two-year-old Toshiba SD-6000. Menu navigation speed is also faster.br /br /Overall, worth buying. In the future, I would like to see the aspect ratio issues resolved.

So far, so good - I. Black - Maryland
Great picture quality. Very sleek and very light. I don't like the remote it is totally black and hard to see buttons, it should be white on black like my Toshiba HDTV remote. But so far, very good buy for the or whatever.

Magnavox DP170MW8B 1080P Upconversion DVD Player Review

I recently bought this Magnavox DVD player because of the price and because it's upscaling. I know some people complained that it was actually made by Funai. That's the way business is now days. Many companies make things for other companies. The point is this DVD player has a terrific picture using the HDMI cable. What a difference from older non-upscaling players I have. The picture does rival HD picture. For the price, it's a steal! I got it for and recommend it highly. If someone actually got a damaged or broken player, I can see their frustration... but this is one terrific player... about the cost of 1 (one) Blu-Ray DVD! BUY IT NOW!
