Works great so far, plays all our DVDs without problem. The conversion quality is satisfying, since I don't really have any previous experiences to compare to. The only thing is that it is a little wider than I expected and it doesn't fit well with my TV stand... Other than that, no complaint

Invest in a better company - Jennifer Lewis - Campbell, CA
I'll keep it brief in saying that within a few days of receipt of this item, it would not read DVDs. Tried a control group of DVDs, including the one that played fine the night previously, to no avail. Then magically, a day or so later, it started to work again. And then within a week, it repeated the glitch.br /br /And because of the third party return policy it isn't worth having it replaced, due to the nature of the defect. Not worth paying that shipping, not worth the time spent, not worth the original purchase.br /br /I am VERY disappointed with this purchase, and I will not buy from this manufacturer again, guaranteed.

lousy picture - Leizel A. Bennett - Havasu, AZ
This dvd player has the worst picture of any player I have ever owned. The picture is inferior to a 6 hr VHS tape. I am trying to return it for a refund and will never buy a Coby product again.

This DVD player does what it should, play DVDs. The only down side is with the remote its a little small and the battery life is poor. But other then that its good.

it sucks! - Penelope Cruz - Washington, DC
if you ever fall asleep without turning the power off, the DVD player will run alllll night long (NOISY). Also, if you loose the remote, you might as well throw it out because it does not have a ffw or rew button, meaning it can't scroll down to the 'Play' feature on the screen.

Nice size, very buggy - Barbara C. French - Rochester, NY United States
I bought this DVD player for the small LCD high def TV in my office. I liked the style and small footprint. I am glad to say that after nine months, it still works, sort of, if you're incredibly patient and willing to play with a lot of buttons to get it to work.br /br /When it does play, it plays well. However, it can take up to ten minutes to fiddling with the buttons on the remote to get it to play. Half the time when I press the Open/Close button to eject the disk, it turns off the unit. The buttons on the actual unit work even less than the remote buttons. If I turn off the unit, it can take up to several more minutes of fiddling with it to make it work. At this point, I'm considering purchasing something different. All I want is to turn on my DVD player and have it eject a disk or play a DVD without hassle. I do not and never have had it with this unit.

Garbage - Eye Forget -
Feels like I went back in time 25 years.br /br /Brand new Samsung tv can't auto detect brand new Samsung dvd player. Not the player's fault, Samsung's. Tried with component and HDMI cables.br /br /You cannot set subtitles to a default off. Every time you insert a dvd, or stop and replay, you get to bring up the subtitles menu, click through the three languages, then select off. If you want to stop the dvd, you get to do it all over again. Designed by someone who's never used a dvd player.br /br /Does not auto detect video sizes. You have to screw with, in my case, the Samsung tv's silly pic size setting which has 4:3, then 2 zoom settings before you get to 16:9 for some inexplicable reason. Samsung should study the art of delivering content, not pressing buttons. The tv was also a step back 25 years.br /br /Extremely slow.br /br /Noisy at times.br /br /On board touch buttons are iffy. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't.br /br /Upscales ok. You get what you pay for and its ok at the price.br /br /Don't pay much attention to the user guide as the buttons it refers to may be labeled different on the remote. Oops, that the Samsung tv again.br /br /Went back the day after we hooked it up. Back to our old Pioneer that at least let's us watch a dvd instead of playing with 2 remote controls (no, the Samsung tv remote cannot control the Samsung dvd player) and waiting for something to happen. Too bad the Sony tv was given away as I would love to have it back as well.

Sony DVP-NS70H HDMI Single Disc DVD Player Review

Recently I purchased a 60" TV, upgrading from a 43". The quality of HD programming is awesome, but the the quality of my DVD collection suffered to the point that it bugged me... a lot. I had heard from a techie friend that 'you will see a difference' with this player, so I decided to give the Sony DVPNS70H a try. What my friend failed to tell me is that I would see considerable better quality images from this player (via the HDMI upscaling feature). I am completely satisfied with the player. However, the remote requires 20/20 vision to read the buttons. So I just programed an easier to use remote for the DVD player.

"High failure rate" spin motor (Player died after 10 months) - webgrunt - USA
Pros: Beautiful picture, adequate menu options, remote has reasonable button layout.br /br /Cons: Slow, takes about ten to twelve seconds to open the DVD tray after you hit the eject button. After working fine for ten months, it quit--just kept saying LOADING - LOADING - LOADING. br /br /br /I do electronics repair, so I opened the unit and found that the DVD spin motor had failed. This DVD player uses a RF-300F-12350 motor, which has a high failure rate. I can replace my motor for under in about 10 minutes, but if you don't do your own small electronics repair, you may have to pay a repair shop or more to get the unit fixed, which is more than what you might pay for a brand new DVD player.

Top of the Line - TheCommish16 - US
This is the clearest DVD player I've ever seen/used. Even desperate housewives on DVD was a visual pleasure with this DVD player. Colors are EXTREMELY vibrant, and upconversion to HD quality on a 42 inch HD plasma is just amazing every time. br /br /This is THE DVD player to own in my opinion. However, I HIGHLY recommend a quality HDMI cable for it...you want the highest level of connection possible from this unit, its worth the extra 30 bucks for the cable.

OPPO DV-970HD Up-Converting Universal DVD Player

OPPO DV-970HD Up-Converting Universal DVD Player Review

See more picture

I have had this recorder for about a year. I unplugged it one day to vacuum and after that, I kept getting a "no disc" message. I tried the remedy suggested in the instruction booklet and I got it to work one more time, but after that, I kept getting the error message. Of course, it is now out of warranty and I would have to pay for it to be repaired. I was very disappointed as I am the only one here and did not use it very often. It was in the cabinet where it was protected, so I felt its life was rather short-lived for the money spent.

OPPO DV-970HD Up-Converting Universal DVD Player Feature

  • Up-converts standard DVD to 720p/1080i high definition output via HDMI (6ft HDMI cable included); Progressive-scan component output
  • Pure and clean 480i NTSC / 576i PAL over HDMI ideal for external video processor/scaler or high end display
  • Official DivX Certified product, plays all versions of DivX video (including DivX 6) with standard playback of DivX media files
  • DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, Super Audio CD (SACD), XviD, Audio CD, HDCD, Kodak Picture CD, WMA and other digital audio and video media/formats
  • Excellent audio performance with Dolby Digital, DTS, Coaxial and Optical digital output, HDMI 1.1 multi-channel audio, 5.1ch and stereo analog output
OPPO Digital's DV-970HD was developed following the success of the OPDV971H, the award-winning upconverting DVD player which scored the highest against hundreds of brands and models in independent DVD player benchmark tests. With experience garnered from the OPDV971H and insightful input from the A/V enthusiast community, OPPO packs the DV-970HD with high performance and enthusiast grade features, all at an incredible value. Today's traditional DVDs and DVD players are intended for low resolution, standard definition televisions. The DV-970HD, designed for every HDTV owner, up-converts standard DVD to high-definition signal, producing clearer, smoother, and crisper video on HDTV and projectors. Its HDMI output ensures a pure, straight digital path for video and audio. In addition to its up-conversion feature, the DV-970HD can output a native 480i/576i resolution over HDMI, making it an incredible digital transport for use with high-end video processors or scalers. Featuring a stylish, slim, and modern design, the DV-970HD includes an integrated 4-in-1 flash memory card reader to allow viewers to enjoy their digital pictures and music. It also offers a USB interface for expanded connectivity. The DV-970HD is one of the most versatile players on the market, providing support for DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, Super Audio CD (SACD), DVD+/-RW and CD-R/RW. It is also compatible with DivX(R) video, XviD, Audio CD, HDCD, Kodak Picture CD, WMA and other digital audio and video media formats. The DV-970HD supports NTSC or PAL disc and television systems. As video is only part of the equation, the DV-970HD also features excellent audio with Dolby Digital surround sound and Pro Logic II decoding. A high-quality certified HDMI cable with gold-plated connectors is included, adding even more value to the already feature-packed product. The OPPO DV-970HD provides most of the performance of the highest-rated OPDV971H, but at a lower price and includes even more features.

Love this thing! - JW - California
I bought this about 4 years ago and it still works great! I gave it to my parents when I upgraded to a dvr but I never had one problem with this and I loved that it could read external hard drives via the USB interface. Awesome product!

BEWARE! Poor Reliability - Poor Customer Service - ElectronicsFAN -
Think twice before buying from Oppo.br /br /I purchased this DV-970HD unit about 2 years ago and in addition - two other units afterwards (2 are newer models). The other 2 units are working (1 I own and the other I gave as a present). For the 970HD, I have used it 10 times as it is not conected to my primary AV system (in the bedroom). However, this past weekend it quit operating and won't read any disks. It just says "no disk" with any disk I put into it.br /br /I called customer care regarding trying a firmware upgrade or any type of resets that might help and was told by their rep "Mason" (he later told me that he is their Technical Service Manager) that there is nothing I can do as it won't read disks (no ability to perform a firmware grade because the disk cannot read it). He then told me that I would need to ship it to him at my expense and then pay for repairs. I expained to him that I have only used this item 10 times and he said that "they don't know that - that this is just my word" (thus, he is saying that he doesn't trust or believe me). I then say I have purchased 2 other units from them and offered to send him proof of these purchases (thus giving him an opportunity to gain trust in what I say) and I also told him that I recommended his company to many others likely giving them more business. I asked, as being a very good customer to Oppo, if he would consider covering all/part of the repair charges. He came back with the same reply - that they have standards to maintain - the 1 year warranty and that there is nothing he can do. I asked him again if he would reconsider and he said no.br /br /I then said that he has left me no choice but to never purchase another Oppo product again, not recommend their product to anyone again and then possibly go onto Amazon.com and give a poor review. He said "there is no chance now that I would grant your request because of a threat". Puzzled, I asked him if there still was a chance that he would have granted my request??? He then said that "if you would have continued to have a positive discussion with him on my situation that he might have..." (i.e.- kiss his a**). I then said that I am not talking to you here to play games and that he his company had an opportunity to satisfy/delight a customer or give customer dissatisfaction, and that you made the decision earlier that you wouldn't help me. I then told him that I will only purchase products from companies that make more reliable products (Sony, Denon, etc...) and would write up this review on Amazon. The final straw for me is what he said in reply to my "threat" (it wasn't a threat, it was a promise), that if I would have played along and begged him he might have given in (when clearly he made up his mind beforehand, or they company did it for him with their policies and $s they put to customer care). I am mostly disappointed because I liked Oppo and wanted the company to succeed, (more small companies producing good products pushes all companies who make like products to produce better products) but this call from "Mason" completely changed my mind about them.br /br /I think Oppo makes DVD players with good features performance - WHEN THEY WORK - but question their reliability to the point of not trusting their quality. My experience having 1 out of 3 fail is quite poor - especially the one that was rarely used. By comparison, I have probably purchased over 25 consumer electronic items from Sony, Denon, Panasonic, etc... over the years and have NEVER had one of those products fail.br /br /Bottom line: You get what you pay for. You can save a little upfront with Oppo, but in the end I think you will likely pay more and have greater hassel with repairs and poor customer service (like a rep who plays the "victim" to a perceived threat, but holds an imaginary carrot out there that he will help you if you play his game).br /br /

Sony DVP-NC85H/S HDMI/CD Progressive Scan 5-Disc DVD Changer, Silver

Sony DVP-NC85H/S HDMI/CD Progressive Scan 5-Disc DVD Changer, Silver Review

I bought this unit about two years ago. Cost ninety bucks for the shelf unit in Circuit City. Put it together with a Toshiba Regza LCD 790p/1080i TV, with an HDMI cable. Absolutely amazing picture at the 1080i output. Just brought home an LG LCD LED 55" and still using the unit. An even more amazing picture. I will soon get a Blu Ray player, but the new TV used up a lot of the budget. At any rate, in about two years, the only problems are the depth of the carousel. I have had a couple of dvd hang ups because they were placed in a little to hastily. My fault. Lately, the HDMI connection seems to have loosed some, and the cable can loosen as well, causing loss of the connection. Despite these issues, it still plays flawlessly, with an amazing picture.

Sony DVP-NC85H/S HDMI/CD Progressive Scan 5-Disc DVD Changer, Silver Feature

  • 720p/1080i Upscaling Video Output through HDMI Input
  • 5 Disc DVD/CD Changer
  • Features Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system
  • Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 Channel Output
  • Plays DVD, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD-R, CD-RW, with MP3, VCD, and SVCD playback
Store hours upon hours of entertainment in Sony's DVP-NC85H/S five-disc carousel changer. This versatile unit plays DVDs and a variety of older disc formats, such as VCD and SVCD, as well as your favorite music CDs. And since the unit supports HDMI connections, you're sure to get the best picture possible. pbHDMI Compatible/bbr High-Definition Multi-media Interface (HDMI) is an interface format that provides uncompressed digital audio and video directly to a digital television. It represents the current state of the art in high-definition video and sound because the information never has to be converted into an analog format. Another benefit of HDMI is that it puts all that information into one cable and one easy-to-use connector./ppAn added benefit of connecting the DVP-NC85H/S to your set with HDMI is that the unit can "upscale" commercial DVDs, which are rendered at 480p resolution, to a digitally interpolated 720p resolution, which makes for a much sharper picture./ppFor analog sets, the DVP-NC85H/S includes a 108 MHz 12-bit digital-to-analog converter for sharp picture and clear action. It features composite, S-video and component video connectors, as well as optical digital, coaxial digital, and RCA analog audio outputs./ppbPrecision Cinema Progressive/bbr While other DVD players detect image changes at the scan line level, Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects them at the pixel level. This makes the picture more faithful to the source--whether film or video--because the technology uses separate, optimized algorithms to handle the differing pixel behavior. It also uses separate algorithms to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are virtually free from motion artifacts./ppbPrecision Drive 3 System /bbr Sony's DVP-NC85H/S delivers excellent picture and sound quality--even from damaged discs. How? The unit's Precision Drive 3 system allows you to playback some DVDs that may have been damaged or warped without a degradation of picture quality. This feature comes in handy when watching rentals or other heavily used discs./ppbMP3 and JPEG File Playback/bbr The DVP-NC85H/S plays MP3 sound files and JPEG photo files. Simply insert the disc and use the remote control to navigate through your folders to your files./p 5 Disc DVD Changer with HDMI Connectivity for HD Ready TVs

Samsung DVD-HD870 Upconverting DVD Player

Samsung DVD-HD870 Upconverting DVD Player Review

See more picture

Overall, this player provides great screen presence and functionality for the price. The glossy black finish gives the appearance of a higher-end model when you first turn the player on and an unavoidably intense blue status light appears, but the euphoric feeling quickly ends and is promptly negated when out of the corner of your eye you see the 80's era faint blue/green block digital alpha-numeric readout (i.e. OPEN, PLAY, etc.). Mechanical whirring and clacking noises occur when the tray is opened and closed. Redemption takes place when the image finally hits the screen.br /br /Five stars for the picture and ease of remote operation.br /Three stars for inconsistencies in appearance and lack of refinement.br /Final verdict = 4 stars

Don't waste your money - Brian Alan Ratliff - Boston, MA
Very disappointed. As others have reported, the remote is very slow to respond to commands. Worked fine out of the box. But started having issues, the most annoying being that via the HDMI output the audio is not sync'd with the picture. And of course it will only up-convert via the HDMI output, which was the major selling point. Audio seems to be fine thru the Component output. br /br /Searched the Samsung website for a possible firmware update. I did not see a "update" listed, but a download was available. I'll give it a shot, but I'm not hopeful.

great dvd player! - Eduardo Escobedo Jr. - Los Angeles, CA
i am hesitant to drop a few hundred on a blu ray player and probably wont buy one till the prices drop or till i can get a good deal of 200 or less...so i decided to buy this upconverting dvd player...and let me tell you, it gets the job done...it is very very close to perfect hd quality...at first u cant tell the difference but if you have any other dvd player in the house you will notice this one does not pixelate as much...this is a great deal if ur not in the financial position to get a blu ray player yet

JVC XVN670B 1080p Upconverting Digital Progressive Scan DVD Player

JVC XVN670B 1080p Upconverting Digital Progressive Scan DVD Player Review

Purchased this item for my second TV in the den/office and have been very satisfied with the product. One caveat is to be careful with the tray, as it is a little delicate. My first unit developed a jam in the first few weeks of use and would not open or close. JVC replaced the unit under the warranty and I've been using ever since with no problems. Great video signal to my 37" Polaroid HDTV LCD via the HDMI interface. This unit has been in service for one year now with no problems whatsoever on the second unit provided by JVC.

JVC XVN670B 1080p Upconverting Digital Progressive Scan DVD Player Feature

  • Multi DVD (-R/RW, +R/RW) Playback
  • JPEG, MP3, WMA Playback
  • 1080p Upconversion
  • Quick Loading
The XV-N670B provides DivX (5.0) playback, the video compression format for computer files on the Internet. DivX accounts for 250 million downloads worldwide, as its video technology offers high-quality video at seven to 10 times greater compression than MPEG-2 files, enabling full length films to easily fit on a CD or be delivered over broadband connections. The XV-N670B also features 1080P up-conversion via HDMI output and also an optical digital output. This is a slim design DVD video player featuring HDMI output (up-conversion 1080p), multi-format playback including DivX (R).

JVC a mixed bag one hopes will be improved on - SF-cineaste - San Francisco
Agree with a prev. reviewer, Moskov's comments about the flimsy feel of the loading tray. Mine actually got stuck at one point and refused to close. After a lot of fiddling, I managed to open the player up and trigger it back in place. br /br /I was surprised that it handled more video formats than my newer usb-equipped Pioneer DV-400. And unlike the quirky Toshiba I replaced, it has no issues with dvd-r's. br /br /The remote wins no points for ergonomics. Worst of all, there's apparently no way to display time-remaining--only time elapsed! That omission is baffling, and I can sympathize if it's a deal-spoiler for some. br /br /That said, if the price were closer to the budget tier its build quality would suggest, JVC would be a good deal because of its format versatility. br /br /I'm hoping JVC will improve on this model: add USB, a better remote, a more informative display, and a sturdier build. They've got some major things right--why not go the rest of the way and really be a contender?
